on Walker Pond

This January 8 2010 the South end of Walker is rough and
partially snow covered.

These two chuncks of ice taken within ten feet of each other
show how little this surface should be trusted. The chunk on
the left was taken from the newly formed ice pictured on the
left and the chunk on the right taken from the snow covered
area.

Nine inches of ice sounds good at the coffee shop but I don't
give that 9" chunk of ice much credit. The saw practically fell
down through it. Even the five inch cube that came from newly
formed ice looks to be half snow ice.

This is the first time I have ever seen a North/South pressure
ridge on Walker. I walked it for a while and found it to be quite
punky under the frozen snow drifts.

This area in the SE corner of Walker was quite smooth but
only 3" thick. I expect this is what the North end will look like
since all of the new ice formed in the same time frame.I didn't
make it to the North end of Walker on this venture but will
attempt to do so this weekend. It appears that it will be the
first of the week before the thickness gets into my comfort
zone.
