Square Nut |
Square Nut is a C Class Skeeter that was built in the 70's by a very clever man named Ed Knuth. As I am told Ed and his son built Square nut and won a couple of ISA Championships with this boat. The boat had been in storage since that time and passed around untill Bill Buchholz came upon her and brought her back to the ice. Bill rigged and sailed Square Nut on Plymouth Pond in Etna, Maine for the first time in 30 years. The rear beam of Square nut had not been properly stored and delaminated during the outing at Plymouth Pond, but before doing so she proved to be a real performer. I was one of the small army involved in raising the 25' wing mast in this craft and stood in awe as I watched her sail. Bill has built a smaller craft for this 07/08 season and allowed me to be the guardian of Square Nut and her rigging. I am currently researching the history of this boat and learning all that I can about her before building a new rear beam for the boat. Foils and flaps were used heavily on this boat from the front runner to the rear beam and even on the top of the mast. There are the remains of automatic adjusting flaps on the rear beam. I am told the boat had self aligning runners but the origional chocks and runners were taken off the boat at some point so I don't know how they worked or what they looked like. It turns out that Henry Bossett was good friends with Ed Knuth and Henry has provided a lot of the information about the boat as well as some vintage photos of her. If anyone has more information or photos of this boat I would love to hear from you. You can email me at kgrindle@roadrunner.com. Special thanks to Henry Bossett for the vintage photos and history on Square Nut. Ed Knuth the builder of Square Nut(in DN) testing a DN sail on a pontoon boat. Is that ice nice or what? |

As can be seen in this photo the foil from the rear beam is no longer in place and Bill mounted chocks and runners from another boat to get Square Nut back on the ice. |
The broken rear beam is examined and discussed. |
